Dante, this year we celebrate the 700th years anniversary of his death in Ravenna.
Why not celebrate Dante with a Hike along his foot prints?
Dante, the public figure, is shared between Florence, his mother republic and Ravenna, his adoptive city.
So let’s begin this post.
Dante, His train
If you are about to visit Italy in 2021 you have a great chance to enjoy the celebrations for Dante.
It’s a great opportunity not to lose to you.
Something really cool and extraordinary is Dante’s train.
You can take a train from 1920/1930, refurbished in wood that leaves every weekend till the end of october from Florence central train station to Ravenna.
It’s a really cool train dedicated to Dante through a beautiful journey taking back his footsteps.
With this train you will cross the Appennino mountains to reach Ravenna and you have 4 intermediate stops before reaching the final destination. The same train will take you back to Florence in the evening.
The Dante’s train (Il treno di Dante) journey lasts 3 hours and you have around 5 hours in Ravenna for some amazing lunch and great museums and mosaics.
Visiting Ravenna is seriously cool. Ravenna has some immaculate mosaics from the Bizantine period that are absolutely breathtaking. You must visit Ravenna’s mosaic once in your life.
This could be a great opportunity that it won’t come back again.
Dante, Hiking in Tuscany
Thanks to Dante’s train (il treno di Dante), you can get off before Ravenna and visit Marradi and Brisighella, which are really cool. If you have been in Ravenna already you can stop in these places and enjoy the day there.
Marradi and Brisighella have so many things to offer for a slow responsible tourism.

Brisighella, especially, is a little gem right at the feet of the Appennino mountains. Brisighella is an important town in one of the National parks,

In both towns you can find so much good stuff to eat and plenty of opportunities to explore by foot the environment around.
Definitely something to avoid the crowds.
Dante’s path
Another great thing, to do to commemorate Dante is taking his footsteps, literally. What do I mean? I mean take a hiking journey for more days from Florence to Ravenna or vice versa:
These walks are marvellous, they require some physical preparation before taking the trip.
Enjoying the footsteps of Dante in his anniversary for the 700th year of his death, it’s a really good idea.
The places you will pass by are breathtaking. I did some of the stages, not all of it and they are incredible.
You pass by beautiful views and landscapes, from rolling hills with vineyards to Appennino mountains and the sea once you are in Ravenna.
Don’t miss the chance this year 🙂
