Would you like to visit some unique in Tuscany? Discover this area of tuscany full of incredible things
Welcome back,
this month for the category of “visit unique Tuscany things” I’ll take you to know Sasso Pisano.
A place not very close to Florence but perfect for the classic weekend trip out of town. Perfect route for everyone, young and old. You could also take the opportunity to spend a night among the splendid metalliferous hills of Tuscany.
Let’s discover this hidden corner of Tuscany, a corner… “hellish”.
Here, in the metalliferous hills, the earth boils. In the surrounding areas between Larderello and Monterotondo Marittimo there are various manifestations of geothermal energy, most of which are used to produce energy, but some are free. The latter are super interesting to visit to better understand these natural phenomena.
Trekking in the middle of the volcanoes
Let’s take the opportunity to do some trekking walking among the small hot water volcanoes of Sasso Pisano. I recommend that you always pay attention, the rocks are really hot, as well as the water that comes out of the small geysers, so stick to the established routes and the rules of common sense.
You need to get to Sasso Pisano: the road is very beautiful but also very winding, so be prepared to face many curves. The reward arrives when you are in Sasso Pisano (https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sasso_Pisano)
There is usually a place to park along Via dei Lagoni, just after crossing the small village (check my track on Komoot, or on the google map “fumarole and Putizze”).
The path starts from there and you will already see the beauty of those places as soon as you get out of the car. Follow the CAI signs and everything will be fine.
The route is really interesting and the glimpses of the metalliferous hills are very beautiful and the children will be thrilled. The path was designed specifically to make you enjoy all the geothermal forms of the area and winds along the thematic path created by local organizations. Games of vapors, incandescent rocks, bubbling water, white and red rocks, small streams of hot water, very hot earth and much more.
Walking on the path you will arrive in Lagoni and then in Monterotondo Marittimo (http://www.turismomonterotondomarittimo.it/biancane.php), where you can stop for a lunch, before returning to the car.
The Devil’s Valley
The valley overlooking Monterotondo Marittimo is called Valle del Diavolo for the quantity of geothermal phenomena.
The majority of them are channeled by the nearby Geothermal Power Station that you will see at the end of the route in Lagoni.
The last aspect of the walk, but not least, is the view of the sea.
Along the path, if it’s a beautiful day, you can see the sea in the distance, something that is always good for the heart.
To return, you can follow the same path you did on the outward journey or follow my track. There is a bit of a difference in height, if you follow my footprints, but it’s worth it.
Because you will see a chestnut grove and some stone houses that have almost collapsed, postcards of a bygone era.
The proposed ring is about 8 km and 410 meters D + and D-.
The Fumarole and Putizze Theme Park offers some detours and alternative routes that you can try to take without ever leaving the marked paths.
The public baths
In the area there are also some small public spas in case you like to dive a bit in some tub of hot water. Among these is the “washhouse in the cemetery”, a name that is not very inviting but given the proximity of the cemetery it is very easy to remember. There are others along the rivers in the area, you can ask the locals who will surely be able to direct you.
