Florence to Rome by bike is is a great adventure. Once in a lifetime journey.
Don’t stay home, embrace the adventure in you
Florence to Rome is the Epic journey you are looking for.
We went from Florence to Rome by bike in 5 full days cycling.
Imagine a journey from the birthplace of Renaissance, Florence, to the eternal city, Rome.
The best bike ride in Tuscany you can have, an experience that fills your eyes with beauty, your soul with joy and your tummy with incredible food and wines.
We combined for you the less trafficked roads for a mix of ancient roads like, The Via Romea del Chianti, The Renaissance Ring, the Eroica of Chianti, the Via Francigena, The Eroica Montalcino and The Euro 5 velo route.
This combination of different roads made our journey from Florence to Rome, epic.
Day 1
91 km and 1.950 mt elevation gained. Arrive: Siena
Riding a bike in Florence is always super cool and leaving the birthplace of Renaissance on the first day cycling is a great feeling.
We rode in front of the Duomo, had a great coffee in Piazza della repubblica, by Palazzo vecchio and on Ponte vecchio before leaving the city.
These world famous sites are the perfect start of the day heading to the Tuscan countryside.
You will ride along less trafficked roads and dirty roads, passing by Impruneta and its suburbs
The gravel session starts in Panzano and ends in Siena.
Surely the gravel session in Chianti Classico is the most fascinating part of the day, a good 40 km on dirty roads.
Riding along these gravel sessions are totally worth the extra effort to arrive in Siena and stay there for the night.
It’s a long day with lots of inclines. The 1st and the 3rd days are the most challenging of the entire trip.
A nice aperitif at the end of the day in Piazza del Campo is so rewarding.
Day 2
61 km and 1.150 mt elevation gained. Arrive: San Quirico d’Orcia
This bike ride in Tuscany is one of the most rewarding you can have.
Totally immersed in the Tuscan gravel kingdom, white dirty roads for you all day.
A dream for bike riders.
Rolling hills, grain fields, deer running, little towns like Murlo and Buonconvento.
Easy day compared to the first one, to recharge your batteries before the big day on day 3.
On day 2 you will cycle along a movie.
Day 3
92 km and 1.900 mt elevation gained. Arrive: Bolsena
Day 3 is another great gravel ride.
Probably the most scenic bike ride of the entire trip. You will ride your bike along fairy tale roads.
It’s the most difficult riding day, especially the main climb to Radicofani. A long, steep bike ride that will consume lots of your energy, but totally worth it.
The downhill from Radicofani is an absolutely fantastic bike ride, a gravel road that will fill your souls with great memories.
A fast rolling downhill not for sensitive hearts 🙂
The inclines and the sceneries along this long bike ride are tough but nothing tremendous if you are decently trained.
Bolsena downtown is not my favorite so I recommend you to find a place, outside the town along the route, to sleep.
Day 4
68 km and 1.150 mt elevation gained. Arrive: Sutri
Days from now onward are getting easier.
The ride is lovely and mostly along the Via Francigena. This bike ride has a major disappointing place, Viterbo.
Despite the old town being pretty, you will be riding around the suburbs of Viterbo and it’s very sketchy.
We didn’t really like this central part of the ride but the beginning part and the end part are really nice.
The ride along the countryside after and before Viterbo is lovely. You will start seeing things left by Romans and lots of Hazelnuts fields.
Yes you will ride along the Nutella hazelnuts fields. For Kilometers you will see only hazelnuts over hazelnuts and Sutri is sooo nice.
Sutri is a perfect destination for the end of the day and a great place for foodies.
We had a great aperitif in a butcher shop and a great dinner in a local restaurant.
Sutri also has a great Roman amphitheater and lots of Roman ruins.
Day 5
68 km and 850 mt elevation gained. Arrive: Rome
This is the easiest day of all 5, arriving in Rome is always fascinating but I have to say way more than I thought.
I mean I was expecting more nasty roads and nasty drivers, instead it was lovely and actually you ride along some scenic gravel roads.
The park of Veio before Formello is super nice and a great ride.
The climb to reach Campagnano di Roma is the toughest of all trip, 800 mt of suffering, pain and crazy heart bit 🙂
What else? You will ride along the ancient via Cassia. You actually ride on the original pavement made by the Romans, a 2.000 years old road. Wooow!!! Such an emotion to ride on roads used by emperors, Annibala and barbarians. A true piece of history.
We had a fantastic lunch served in a fish shop at Porta Nuova, surprisingly good and fresh.
Nothing is more rewarding than the final stretch into Rome and the arrive at the Vatican.
Totally worth it.
Rome has a great night life to celebrate.
