Cinque Terre Wines and Villages
Ciao Folks, today we talk about Cinque Terre Wnes – Beyond the villages.
Simple and easy guide to Cinque Terre Wines.
When you come up with the name Cinque Terre,
First you normally think about the beautiful coastline villages and second the delicious typical wines and delicacies offered.
Wines are always ambassadors of their territories and The CInque Terre wines are one of these examples.
National park and Villages
If you are going to visit the Cinque Terre National park and its villages you will see an incredible territory shaped by winemakers and farmers.
The territory of Cinque Terre is something special and unique with its terraces from mountains going down straight to the sea.
The territory represents a unique connection between Cinque Terre villages and its inhabitants.
The villages have been built by farmers to cultivate the land. People moved here to escape from crowded valleys nearby for agriculture purposes.
So, first we have the land transformed by farmers.
Then the villages expanded thanks to their position along the coast and their farming products, like wines.

Wines and Terraces
Let’s talk about Cinque Terre Wines produced on this incredible system of dry stone walls terraces.
Winemakers and farmers for centuries have shaped their territory with a system of terraces and that still today impress thousands of people from all over the world.
The soil here is dry and rocky even if it rains a lot. It rains so much that locals call Liguria, the Italian region of the Cinque Terre, the Italian Piss-house (ahahhahahahaha) 🙂
In a sarcastic way of course.
So, working the land here has always been a very hard job, actually and an endless job. Only recently, with the introduction of modern little monorail trains, life of farmers got easier. Not simple, just easier.
Still today there are winemakers that are harvesting some terraces using boats, cause the terraces are reachable only via sea and only by boat grapes are harvested and taken in the cellar.
The winemaking process here is called heroic viticulture.
They are modern Farm Heroes, dedicating their lives to obtain 2 main wines Cinque Terre DOC white wine and Sciacchetrà sweet wine.
Here is a video of the little trains in action and the harvest in the Cinque Terre:
Cinque Terre DOC White wine and Sciacchetrà
These 2 wines, Cinque Terre Doc white wine and Sciacchetrà are very different wines.
The first is a dry white wine, I would say pretty much simple and not too particular. Of course it depends on the producers but it tastes delicious anyway. It combines perfectly with the food of the Cinque Terre.
But if you compare this white wine, in a large scale to the Italian white wines, then it loses its importance and becomes secondary to other white wines.
Instead, the second wine, Sciacchetrà it’s a very special and unique sweet wine of Italy. It challenges other italian sweet wines and it wins in many cases.
There aren’t many products in Italy produced such in a small quantity and with such a unique taste.
Sciacchetrà definitely represents the excellence of this territory.
It has a golden amber colour, at the nose has notes of honey, brackish, dry ripened fruits, caramel and saffron. The mouth is intense, persistent, sweet, a touch of salt and acidity, alcohol around 12/14%. Low Alcohols level is a note unique to this sweet wine that makes it perfect to be combined with cakes, cheeses, foie gras and for meditation.
I can guarantee that for its acidity, it is very easy to drink a bottle of Sciacchetrà meditating :))) hhaihaahihaihahhahahahaha.
